Barry K. Riddle was appointed to the Indianapolis Fire Department on 02/25/1986. He first served as a volunteer on the Pittsboro Fire Department starting at age 18 working for 5 years, before being hired by IFD.

Barry spent his first day out of recruit school assigned to Engine 16 C shift on 06/01/1986. He was regularly assigned to Engine 18 C shift on 10/03/1988, and stayed there for over 13 years, before being promoted to Lieutenant on 03/18/2002.

Barry went to TSU 10 C shift on 04/29/2002, TSU 18 B shift on 06/24/2002, then to Engine 01 B shift on 04/05/2003. He was next promoted to Captain 0n 04/26/2008. Barry went to lead the crew of Engine 29 B shift on 06/07/2008, Engine 02 A shift on 03/23/2015, Engine 25 A shift on 04/04/2016, and finally returned to the 18s on Engine 18 A shift on 04/30/2018.

He was promoted to Battalion Chief on 07/30/2022. Barry’s first assignment as a Battalion Chief was Safety Central C shift on 09/01/2022. He went next to Battalion 02 A shift on 02/27/2023, before making his final transfer to his present assignment as Battalion 04 C shift at the 43’s on 08/13/2023. Barry was known to everyone on the job with the countless shifts he worked overtime on IFD.

He enjoyed traveling and hiking around the United States, including long hiking adventures on the Appalachian Trail and other destinations. Barry’s love of baseball is reflected by his baseball memorabilia collection and supporting the Cincinnati Reds. His passion was his family and times with his grandson. Barry also provided EMS coverage at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and for IU Health when he wasn’t working shifts at the fire station.
